Christmas in Hamburg is an experience no one should miss if in Germany during December. The city hosts numerous Christmas markets and the most famous one is located in front of the Rathaus (the town hall). Hamburg is a treat for the senses during the holidays. The sight of the decorated city and Christmas markets, the smell of mulled-wine and roasted nuts and the sound of Christmas fill the air. The Christmas market in Nürnburg is probably the most well known of the German Christmas markets, but Hamburg should be among the top choices. The city of Hamburg sets a perfect scenery for Christmas markets and one has a feeling that it is an ongoing market starting at the train station and ending at the Alster River.    Spitalerstrasse The best way to see Christmas in Hamburg at its best is to start at the “Hauptbahnhof” or the main train station. When you walk towards the city you will automatically find an offical entrance on the Spitalerstrasse similar to this one.   As you continue, you will find festivally decorated booths such as this one.   Hamburg is a treat for the senses during the holidays. The sight of the decorated city, the smell of mulled-wine and roasted nuts and the sound of Christmas in the air.   Wooden Manger Scene   Mönkebergstrasse Parallel to the Spitalerstrasse is the Mönkebergstrasse. It is also fabulously decorated for the holidays. This is one of the best shopping streets in Hamburg.   The Christmas Market at the Rathaus (the town hall) This is a picture of the town hall of Hamburg. It is the majestic setting of the Christmas market. The market is a traditional one and enjoyable to see.   Christmas Market on the “Alster” The Alster River also flows through Hamburg and a sea from the river has been created in the center of town. Is the romantic setting of the Christmas market in the picture below. This particular market is not the traditional type of market like the one at the town hall, but set in lit tents which add an almost romantic flair to the setting.  Unique gift items get sold here as well as different foods. Trees are decorated in blue lights instead of white ones which also influence the charm of the market.     The Christmas Tree in the Market Square A gorgeous tree on the Spitaler Strasse.   This is the entrance to the Christmas market at the Rathaus of Hamburg.   Here is a picture of one of the stands to be found at the Christmas market. This particular stand is actually a small heated hut and belongs to Käthe Wohlfahrt Company which is a well known business for selling wooden Christmas items.
