The City of Hamburg and the Christmas Market
Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany and is located on the Elbe River in northwest Germany. It is a lovely city to visit at any time of the year but is an especially wonderful location to be during the month of December.
Hamburg is simply a treat for the senses during Christmas. The city itself is festively decorated with white lights adorning the trees and buildings and looks especially fantastic in the evening hours. There are several gorgeous Christmas markets to visit where holiday music fills the air and the aroma of mulled-wine and roasted chestnuts and almonds magnetically draw you to the stands offering these.
The Christmas market in Nürnberg is probably the most well known of the German Christmas markets. But to be honest, after visiting several German Christmas markets, including ones in Nürnberg, Stuttgart and Frankfurt, the main Christmas market in front of the Hamburg city hall (Rathaus) is our favorite. It looks so charming with its traditionally decorated booths and the majestic city hall in the background gives it an elegant flair, too.
Hamburg actually has several markets in the city. Another lovely market can be found along the “Binnenalster” which is a sea in the middle of the city and not to far to walk to from the Rathaus market. It looks very different from the Rathaus market because it is set up with white tents which are colorfully lit up from inside. But also there you can find gift ideas and delicacies to eat.
