The City of Lübeck
Lübeck is situated in the northernmost state of Germany Schleswig-Holstein. Lübeck can be found on a penisula on the Trave River and had a high historical importance in the middle ages for sea trading, due to its location on the Baltic Sea.
Lübeck has one of Germany’s most beautiful Christmas markets. The market extends from the Breite Strasse (the pedestrian shopping street) to the town market square. In the market square, there is usually a medival Christmas market to be found to add to the already fantastic atmosphere of the market.
Below is a picture of Lübeck taken from the other side of the Trave River. The city is lighted with white Christmas lights and even the ships get into the spirit by decorating their masts.

Arriving at the Market in the City Market Square
The tremendously sized tree in the center of the market square is surrounded by many stands or booths selling everything from food, mulled wine, Christmas gifts, hand crafted articles and Christmas decorations and ornaments for the home and tree. If you are lucky, there is also a medival market which has the flair of the middle ages.

The Christmas Musicians
A sound of Christmas is in the air when the musicians play typical German and even some English Christmas hymns high above the market place. This highlight gave the market a charming atmosphere.

Niederegger Marzipan
While at the Lübeck Christmas market, it is a must to go to Niederegger. It can be found on the Breite Strasse and attracts tourists from all around the world. Niederegger is probably the most famous marzipan around. Even if you are not a fan of marzipan, it is worth walking through this store. It is beautifully decorated and offers so many gift ideas out of marzipan. You can also purchase chocolates, coffee, tee and wine. A café upstairs is also available there where you can enjoy a cup of hot coffee or tea, too.

High over the market square in the center you cannot miss the festive Christmas tree. Streams of lights extend from the tree to the neighboring buildings.
